Cristo Redentor is a statue of Jesus of Nazareth in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, considered the largest Art Deco statue in the world and the 5th largest statue of Jesus in the world. The world famous Rio de Janeiro Christ the Redeemer statue is the face of this amazing city. This breath taking masterpiece overlooking Rio has been admired and visited by millions of people since it was first built in 1931. It is 39.6 metres (130 ft) tall, including its 9.5 metres (31 ft) pedestal, and 30 metres (98 ft) wide. It weighs 635 tonnes, and is located at the peak of the 700-metre (2,300 ft) Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park overlooking the city. The Rio de Janeiro Christ the Redeemer statue is one of the most significant land marks around the world. The idea behind the statue was first proposed in the mid 1850's when a Catholic Priest by the name of Pedro Maria Boss requested the finance to build a religious monument in the city. Christ the Redeemer statue is a worldwide symbol for peace. The overall design of the statue was created by a local designer however, a French sculptor was commissioned to sculpt the Christ the Redeemer. A symbol of Brazilian Christianity, the statue has become an icon for Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. It is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone, and was constructed between 1922 and 1931.
